FIVE MILES?!

Today J and I met up for a run in Caumsett State Park. We had run at Caumsett once before, the first week of training. I distinctly remember the places that I had to stop to take breaks because I just could not go on any longer. Today, I blew past all of those places in the first round. Sunday is our long run day, and our long run was 4 miles. The loop we do is only 2.7 miles, so we have to go around more than once. I was counting all of my small victories along the way. The lack of side cramps, no need for walking breaks, and keeping up with J for the first 3 miles. Before I knew it, I had done almost the whole loop twice just running!! J had the mileage on her phone, and she outran me toward the end. I did end up walking some, so I can’t be sure that I ran the whole 5.2. I did, however, only take one walking break for about 3 minutes. J ran the whole thing!! I am so proud of us! W was in the stroller cheering us along the whole way, the best way his little 10 month old self knew how.

I was so proud of us, but completely exhausted and so hungry for the rest of the day. I also have a strange little pain in my hip. I iced it, because I am not quite sure what else to do but ice and rest. I think the pain is a result of wearing less supportive sneakers than I usually do. I didn’t have my regular pair with me today. I am going to cross train tomorrow and Tuesday. J and I are running a 5K on Wednesday night, so I want to be fresh.

I leave for Europe on Friday! Tomorrow I am going to start some last minute shopping and a little early packing. We fly into Amsterdam on Friday night and then straight over to Dublin. We return to tour Amsterdam properly later on in the trip. I can’t wait!

Going Home

Tomorrow we will be on our way home! Tonight we stayed over in Virginia where I had this awesome dinner of white beans, tomatoes and goat cheese at Houlihan’s. We apparently love Houlihan’s. It is really good though…

I got an email from my tour director for Europe today! I’m really excited to leave. I depart next Friday. I return August 8th. I’m a little nervous about how this is going to effect training, as I didn’t get as much exercise in as planned this week. J is rocking on at home without me. Yay J! Ryan and I went to the hotel gym when we arrived today. Again there was only one treadmill, so we shared. I ended up doing 2 miles on the treadmill, 2 miles on the elliptical and 4 miles on the bike. I’m really excited to run my regular route tomorrow at home!

Zorbing!

We explored Pigeon Forge, TN a little bit today. The day started out with breakfast at Mel’s Diner. A veggie omelet not worth picturing here. It was yummy though! Then we headed over to “Zorb Smoky Mountains”. There, my dad and brother partook in the festivities. My mom and I stuck around at the bottom of the trail waiting for them.

They opted for the Zydro type Zorb. A big Zorb ball with some water in the middle to keep them from flying all over the place with the Zorb.  Nuts.

It’s hot and we are on a mountain, so running outside of our cabin is not possible. I woke up this morning and found the gym around 7AM. Unfortunately there was only 1 treadmill and it was in use so I ended up doing 3 miles on the elliptical in about 20 minutes and then an additional mile on the treadmill. I LOATHE the treadmill. I am scheduled for a long run tomorrow, and clearly that is not happening. Instead I am aiming to wake around the same time and do a hill workout by walking/jogging up the mountain and then back down again while tracking mileage. We’ll see how that goes.

Tennessee

After two days of traveling with my family, we finally made it to Tennessee! We stayed over in Virginia last night and got another start this morning. I had this seriously awesome breakfast:

I used to just take pictures of my favorite meals and text them to boyfriend to admire. I know he does not care what I’m eating. So now I can just post it on here. It’s my blog. I’ll do what I want. :)

We drove through Shenandoah National Park on our way to our final destination. There were tons of beautiful views along the way.

We just got to our mammoth cabin in the Smoky Mountains. The views are awesome from every window. It’s too dark to take any pictures now, more tomorrow.

I was scheduled to do a 3 mile run today. I should have thought ahead and ran this morning at the hotel. I didn’t though. Now it’s too dark and we are on top of a mountain. I can’t find the gym, so today was an extra rest day for my aching calves. I’ll have to try again tomorrow!

Icy Shins

After a good rest day yesterday (no running!) I picked back up today. I did a solo run, no J to get me out the door. Much harder than I thought. We’ve only done one run apart since starting. She is really critical to my motivation and, apparently, my pacing. After a quick text message to let her know how lazy I was feeling and that I was intending to run at 11:30, I dawdled for a little while longer and then laced up and went  out. I took my phone with me and at exactly 11:31 I got a text from J saying

“It’s 11:31. I hope you’re on your run!”

That’s some accountability! Luckily I was out and about. I did 3.1 miles with a warm up and cool down totaling 45 minutes. I’m not going to share my splits too often because I am not focusing on time, just finishing the entire half marathon. I have the rest of my life for PR’s :)  It was quite warm out. I did a flat route around my town.

My shins have been bothering me. I started researching shin splints online. The areas of my legs that hurt align with the most common shin splint complaints. It said to ice and stretch repeatedly, after every run and even on off days if you have to. That’s how I ended up on my bed like this while watching 16 and Pregnant:

Today is boyfriend’s birthday!! Happy birthday boyfriend!!!

First Week Down!!

Hi friends! I’m in my second week of half marathon training. You may be wondering why I have decided to make this commitment. I am wondering the same thing… :)   Really, I just think running is a valuable form of exercise. It doesn’t cost much (except for insane shoes!!) and you can pretty much do it anywhere. I wanted to dive right in and get started. So why not commit to 13.1 miles? Plus, a half marathon is on my bucket list. No better time than now.  I’m staying motivated and tracking my mileage through this blog. I also have a running partner, J.  And the cutest mascot ever, W, who rides along in his stroller on short runs.

We started training on June 17. We are running 3-4 times a week. Last week we ran a total of 16 miles.  Our first “long run” was on Sunday and consisted of 4 miles. It was quite a wake up call. Yesterday was our hill workout day. I did not count the mileage, but it was tough! So far my cross training consists of yoga and swimming on my off running days.

Our half marathon is on Sunday October 2! A few months to go :)
